I am so mad at myself...I just wanted to let you all know. So one of my all time favorite things to do as a nurse is to put in IV's. I know it sounds mean but really...IV's are hard and I pride myself when my patient tells me they are a hard stick and I get it the first try. So last night at work this gal comes to our floor in obvious Labor. I rush to her room and attempt an IV. I put the tourniquet on and find she has tiny, squirly veins with lots of valves...perfect. I blew the vein on tries 1 and 2 but the third time is a charm. I get awesome flashback in my catheter, pull the needle out and attach the IV tubing. While I pull away to unclamp the tubing and start the IV infusion, I notice something dangling from my glove. "You have got to be kidding me!!" was all I was thinking. I had accidentally screwed a part of my glove to the hub of my catheter where the tubing goes in and when I pulled away I had actually pulled the whole IV out. Sooo... the IV catheter was dangling from my glove. It took 2 more tries from another nurse to finally get that damn IV in. Why did I do that? That poor girl was poked 5 times. So needless to say...I am so mad at myself and a reminder to all my nurse friends...Make sure your glove isn't stuck in the hub of your catheter when attaching the tubing. It will make for a bad night.

Ouch! Doesn't sound like fun. She will get over it though even if it made you feel super frustrated. I've had that happen many a time where I've had to be poked 3-5 times. I'm sure it helped to vent it... ((HUGS))
AH, that's terrible! I'm sorry. I hate when things like that happen-
I've totally done it before, though. One time I was starting an IV, and before I started I wiggled the catheter up and down the needle a little to make sure it was loose and patent and whatnot, and then I slipped that bad boy in and was SO excited to see flashback- it was a good hit. So I went to thread the catheter and...WHAT? No catheter! It fell off when I picked up the needle because I had jiggled it to make sure it would come off when I wanted it to! So here I am in the vein and nothing to thread into it. Grr...
If it ever happens again you can say, "Oh well. At least you didn't have Melody, she'd poke you thrice and never get it!"
:)
Only you tell the best stories! If that is the worst you felt of 3 nights with no sleep you are doing awesome. I have to say that you ARE the Best Nurse!!!
Haha, I was just going to tell my story that's just like Melody's...the catheter fell off and I just stabbed her with a needle for nothing, really. Hope your night was good...how did room 5 treat you? Did she call me a butthead?
poor steph! i guess it could have been worse right!
You are excellent at IV's. I hope this dosen't make you feel otherwise!!!
